The VA’s Claim Status Tool enables Veterans to check the status of their VA claims online using their VA.gov login. This tool provides updates on which claims are currently in progress and highlights any actions Veterans may need to take. Additionally, it allows Veterans to review recent activity related to their claims.

Enhancements to the Claim Status Tool

The VA has recently upgraded the Claim Status Tool to enhance the digital self-service experience. The tool now offers a detailed breakdown of the eight-step disability claims process, making it easier for Veterans to understand the current status of their claims. The steps are as follows:

  • Step 1: Claim Received
The VA acknowledges receipt of your claim in its system.
  • Step 2: Initial Review
The VA checks your claim for basic details such as your name and Social Security Number.
  • Step 3: Evidence Gathering
The VA ensures that your claim includes all necessary information. During this step, the VA may request additional evidence, such as a medical exam or records from a VA or non-VA provider.
  • Step 4: Evidence Review
The VA reviews all the evidence collected for your claim.
  • Step 5: Rating
The VA makes a decision on your claim and assigns a disability rating.
  • Step 6: Preparing Decision Letter
The VA prepares the decision letter, which includes details like disability ratings, monthly payment amounts, and the start date for payments. This letter cannot be viewed on VA.gov until Step 8.
  • Step 7: Final Review
A senior VA reviewer conducts a final review of the claim and decision letter.
  • Step 8: Decision Letter Available
You can view and download your decision letter from the Status page of the Claim Status Tool.

Additional Features of the Claim Status Tool

The Claim Status Tool is organized into three main tabs:

  • Status: This tab informs you of any actions you can take to support your claim and lists requests made to third parties.
  • Files: The Files tab provides details about information requests made to you, a button to upload files, and a list of supporting documents you have submitted to the VA.
  • Overview: The Overview tab gives a description of the claims process, highlights each step, and explains that the process may return to an earlier step if more information is needed.

With the Claim Status Tool, you no longer need to contact a call center or regional office for updates on your claims. This tool provides convenient access to important claim information whenever you need it. It represents another advancement in the VA’s ongoing mission to support Veterans and their families. For more information on how to use the Claim Status Tool, visit the Claims Status page.
