Texas Veteran conquers rehabilitation after stroke

Just 30 days after suffering a right-sided stroke, Army Veteran Tim Fanning is making remarkable progress in his recovery journey. Initially treated at a local healthcare facility, Fanning was transferred to the Dallas VA Medical Center for specialized rehabilitation, where he has been steadfast in his efforts to regain his independence.

A stroke occurs when blood flow to a part of the brain is interrupted, depriving brain cells of oxygen and glucose, and is the fifth leading cause of death among men. Without timely treatment, strokes can result in permanent brain damage or even death. Rehabilitation plays a crucial role in helping stroke survivors regain as much physical, mental, and emotional function as possible, focusing on movement, speech, strength, and daily activities like eating and dressing.

Fanning’s daily rehabilitation routine at the Dallas VA is intense, but he remains positive. “Every single day is very busy but also very good. The rehabilitation is pushing me to new limits,” Fanning shared. His progress has been fueled by his determination and the guidance of his occupational therapist, Jessica Menth.

Menth highlighted Fanning’s significant achievements, such as his ability to perform push-ups, which reflect his physical improvement and commitment to the rehabilitation program. “He definitely has a relentless pursuit of progress that is defining his therapy experience,” she noted.

Fanning’s journey through rehabilitation is ongoing, and while recovery can take months or even years for some patients, his attitude remains unwavering. “I want to get better and I will conquer anything they throw at me on my journey to getting back to being me,” Fanning stated, exemplifying the resilience and grit that are driving his recovery.
