Extra funds are on the way for certain individuals.
CalFresh, California’s version of the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), offers monthly financial aid to eligible low-income individuals and families, helping them purchase nutritious food.
California residents are anticipating the release of CalFresh payments, and it’s crucial for recipients to understand the exact timing and details of these payments to plan their grocery shopping effectively this week.
These benefits are provided through an electronic benefits transfer (EBT) card, which functions like a debit card and can be used at participating grocery stores and farmers’ markets.
The timing for loading benefits onto the EBT card is based on the last digit of the recipient’s case number, with distribution occurring over the first ten days of each month. For example, if a recipient’s case number ends in ‘1,’ they will receive their benefits on the 1st of the month.
Additional CalFresh Payments
Governor Gavin Newsom has announced a major initiative to combat food insecurity among children in California. The California Department of Social Services (CDSS) is launching SUN Bucks, a federal food program designed to ensure children from low-income families have access to adequate nutrition during the summer months.
The SUN Bucks program is a result of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023, passed by Congress in December 2022.
SUN Bucks will provide $120 per child, equating to $40 per month, over the three-month summer period when schools are typically closed. This financial support aims to reduce food insecurity and ensure that children have consistent access to nutritious meals during the summer break.
Children eligible for free or reduced-price school meals through a school meal application, an alternative income form, or who are enrolled in CalFresh, CalWORKs, or Medi-Cal, will be automatically enrolled in the SUN Bucks program.
California is one of the first states to implement this new food assistance program, quickly providing financial support to families in need.
