The application window for the rebate is open
The Montana Department of Revenue is preparing to launch its second round of property tax rebates for eligible residents. This program offers a rebate of up to $675 for property taxes paid on a primary residence.
To be eligible, homeowners must have both owned and lived in their Montana home for at least seven months in 2023 and must have paid property taxes on that property. It’s important to note that properties owned by entities or irrevocable trusts do not qualify for this rebate.
The application period for the rebate is open from August 15 to October 1. Applying online is the fastest option, with the process taking just a few minutes.
According to the official website, “We will begin accepting claims for the rebate for Tax Year 2023 on August 15, 2024, and all claims must be filed by October 1, 2024. We cannot accept any claims for Tax Year 2023 after this date.”
“Online rebate claims will be processed within 30 days. Paper claims may take up to 90 days to process. Once your rebate is processed, please allow at least 4 weeks for delivery before contacting us about your check. Rebate checks will be mailed to the taxpayer; direct deposit is not available.”
“There were several rebate scams last year during the application period. Please watch for DOR Communications for the most up-to-date information.”
How Will Residents Receive Their Rebates?
Rebates will be issued via paper checks, so residents should keep an eye on their mail. Additionally, the Department of Revenue is urging taxpayers to be cautious of potential scams during the rebate application period.
To avoid fraudulent activity, it’s recommended to apply early through the official website, getmyrebate.mt.gov.
Governor Greg Gianforte’s office has emphasized that this rebate program is part of a broader effort to provide significant tax relief, touting it as the largest property tax rebate in Montana’s history and noting that reforms have saved taxpayers over $120 million.
